Media Industries accepts open call submissions on a rolling basis.

Submissions can address the full spectrum of media industries, including film, television, internet, radio, music, publishing, gaming, advertising, and mobile communications, and query a range of industry-related concerns and processes, such as production, distribution, infrastructure, policy, exhibition, and retailing. Contemporary or historical studies may explore industries individually or examine relations between industrial sectors, employing qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methodologies.

We expect contributions to adopt a critical, rather than instrumental, perspective and engage with relevant media industries literature. We are especially interested in contributions that draw attention to global and international perspectives, and use innovative methodologies, imaginative theoretical approaches, and new research directions. We encourage authors to employ the online format creatively by incorporating audiovisual materials and hyperlinks within their articles.

Submissions must adhere to the following author guidelines or they will be returned to the author(s) for revision:

  • All submissions are blind and peer-reviewed; therefore author names must not appear within the document, in the visible metadata, or in the file name.
  • All submissions must use the Chicago Manual of Style endnote and bibliography system (16th ed.). Bibliographies should only contain academic sources cited in endnotes.
  • All submissions must range between 5,000 and 7,000 words (inclusive of image captions and endnotes but exclusive of bibliography).
  • Please double-space throughout the manuscript and use a consistent 12-point font.
  • Please make sure that you include production years (in parentheses) following any productions (e.g. films, television programs, radio shows, etc) referenced in the text.
  • Please render all spellings in American English. To change British or Commonwealth spellings to their American equivalents, please see the Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary.
  • If hyperlinks are included, please make sure they are active and ready to click. Insert the full URL link in braces {URL} following the text to be hyperlinked. It is up to the author to alert the editors to dead links before publication.
  • If audiovisual materials, tables, or charts are included, please attach individual files AND place the material within the text at the appropriate point with labels (e.g., Table 1, Fig. 2, etc.).
  • Authors must acquire authorization for any media materials used and/or ensure they fall under the definition of fair use.
  • Authors must carefully proofread their work before submission.
  • Authors must acknowledge all outside funding sources in the endnotes.
Media Industries does not charge authors for the publication of their articles.
